Pat shrimp dry with paper towels and season with salt and pepper on both sides.
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add 2 tablespoons of butter and let it melt.
Add shrimp to the skillet in a single layer. Cook for 1-2 minutes per side until pink and cooked through. Remove shrimp to a plate.
Reduce heat to medium and add remaining 2 tablespoons butter to the same skillet.
Add minced garlic and red pepper flakes (if using). Sauté for 30 seconds until fragrant, being careful not to burn.
Add lemon juice and lemon zest to the skillet, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom.
Return shrimp to the skillet and toss to coat with the garlic butter sauce. Cook for 1 minute to heat through.
Remove from heat and stir in fresh parsley and thyme. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
Serve immediately with lemon wedges and crusty bread or over rice or pasta.
